MAPP Programs Instructional Overview
The Children’s Alliance of Kansas (CAOK) is the current national owner of the copyrighted “toolbox”
of MAPP programs.
NYS Office of Children and Family Services (NYS OCFS) has permission from
CAOK to provide MAPP programs
(GPSII/MAPP,
Caring for our Own, Deciding Together, Shared Parenting, Mini-MAPP and Fostering and/ or Adopting the Child Who Has Been Sexually Abused)
to certify leaders through leader certification workshops and directly to foster/adoptive parents in NY State.
NYS OCFS
also has permission from CAOK
to modify the MAPP curricula in order to meet the specific needs of NY State agency staff
and foster/adoptive parents.
Note that any curriculum revisions need to be submitted to the appropriate NYS OCFS
Regional Office so the proposed changes can be reviewed.
If approved, there must be a request to CAOK for permission to incorporate adaptations of the national training materials.

Program Development:
All of the MAPP programs were developed by the use of the ADDIE model:
- Analyze—analyze learner characteristics, tasks to be learned, etc. Identify Instructional Goals, Conduct Instructional Analysis.
- Design—develop learning objectives, identify desired outcomes, identify abilities and enabling abilities to be developed, define instructional approach. Develop Assessment Instruments; De- velop Instructional Strategy; Develop Learning Design.
- Develop—create instructional or training materials. Design and selection of materials appropri- ate for learning activity, Design and Conduct Formative Evaluation.
- Implement—deliver or distribute the instructional materials.
- Evaluate—make sure the materials achieved the desired goals through ongoing feedback.

Instructional/Learning Modality:
- Educational Group Process
- Educational Support Group (“Caring for Our Own” only)
- Consultation (“Deciding Together” only)
Instructional Staff:
- Recommended: 2 certified staff trainers and 1 certified Foster/Adoptive parent trainer.
- Minimum Required: 2 certified staff trainers or 1 certified staff trainer and certified 1 foster/adoptive parent trainer (all programs except “Deciding Together”).
- Deciding Together: 1 certified staff trainer/consultant
Recommended Seating Design: U-Shaped Seating Arrangement
(All MAPP Programs with the exception of “Deciding Together” for which “Face-to-Face” seating is recommended).
Recommended Environmental Learning Structure:
All MAPP Programs with the exceptions of “Caring for Our Own” and “Deciding Together”:
- 26 participants maximum
- 12 participants minimum
“Caring for Our Own:”
- 12 participants maximum
- 4 participants minimum
“Deciding Together:”
- 4 participants maximum
- 1 participant minimum
Delivery Structure:
One “meeting” maximum per week.
(No more than one “meeting” per week is essential in order to support participant learning retention and to provide sufficient time for reading assignments and participant self-assessment).

Lectures, Large Group Activities, Small Group Activities, Brain Storms, Role Plays, Skits, Sculptures, Discussions, Warm–up Activities, Small–Team projects,
Small–Team Competitions, Handouts, Reference Materials, Participant Workbooks (“Deciding Together” and “Caring for Our Own” only)
Audio/Visual Tools:
VHS/DVD Movies, Flip Charts, PowerPoint Slides.
